Where to eat and drink in Malta?

The Avenue

When you’re abroad it’s easy to indulge, what we liked about The Avenue was a break from less healthy options with their side dishes of vegetables. Occasionally a restaurant with a larger menu does not always deliver on quality, The Avenue was definitely an exception. The menu choice was fantastic with Pasta dishes, stakes, curry, stroganoff and lots of side options.

And if you don’t feel like venturing out they will also deliver to your hotel.

Hugo’s Terrace

When you’re in Malta if you’re staying anywhere near St Julian’s it will be hard to miss a “Hugo’s” establishment.

The Hugo’s Terrace is a new development that is very stylish and has views of the sea and nearby beach.

Where to stay in Malta?

Beach Garden Hotel

We have to admit that we made the mistake of booking this hotel before paying too much attention to the reviews. We were quite nervous about staying here after reading some of the reviews and seeing it was a 2-star Hotel. We were so relieved when we got to room and it was perfectly clean with a very modern bathroom. The prices for the Hotel were very low which matched the expectation of a 2-star rating.

The only downside was the location of our room being close to the nightlife we did need to use earplugs but suspect the rooms on the other side of the hotel were likely much quieter.

The extra bonus of this hotel was a large outside bar, big screen and swimming pool.

St Julian’s Bay Hotel

The location of this hotel is great. Further away from the nightlife it’s quieter, with sea view rooms.

Its a simple hotel with reasonable prices. And straight outside the hotel is a long wide coastal path, if you’re feeling up to it it’s great for going for a jog or a cycle. If a more leisurely pace if more your style there are a few cafes along the path with sea views.

Final thoughts on Malta

While Malta has been advertised a lot as a great destination for elder generations, it has something to offer to various holiday goers, with 18-30 being catered with their Paceville nightlife area and the family attractions such as the Popeye village.

On our last trip to Malta we decided to take a hire car. While Malta is a very small Island and they recently upgraded their buses (which sometimes struggle to maneuver their small streets) the hire car gave us so much flexibility to see areas we hadn’t before. I would definitely recommend a hire car but do opt for the extra insurance as the roads and driving style isn’t the greatest, with some friends telling us that in Malta they don’t drive on the left or the right….they drive in the shade.

Being based in the Midlands when flights available from East Midlands Airport directly to Malta its a very convenient sunny getaway and we’d definitely go again!
